the new colossus.

"The New Colossus" is a sonnet by Emma Lazarus (1849-1887), written in 1883 and, in 1903, engraved on a bronze plaque and mounted inside the Statue of Liberty.

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Emma Lazarus, 1883

This kept creeping into my thoughts the last few days as I've been a bit homesick for America. Isn't it amazing the foundations that the United States was built upon?? I know, I know... its far from its foundations at times it seems... but still, under the years and years of politics, poor decisions etc etc... this was proclaimed... a call for the broken and lost to find light and be welcomed in. What a beautiful picture. You can't help but see the likeness to our invitation from Jesus...

I love this invitation. I needed it. I accepted it. It changed my life forever.

I can't imagine my life without Jesus. I would be l-o-s-t, in every possible way.
((Every US citizen should learn about that poem))

And isn't it wonderful to know that Jesus, unlike the States, will never waver from it?

jill--I've just discovered your blog over the last few days, and I've been so touched and inspired by your writings. You write in such a relatable, passionate way that makes the Gospel and intimacy with Jesus so attractive! Can't wait to keep up with your journey on here :)
p.s. I also just found out that you grew up with Justin Flynn. I've been going to church with the Justin and his wife for many years now--the world is so small!

Hi Jill
Great to find your blog! I've been following you on twitter as your testimony on the 'This is our God' album has meant so much to me in a hard time in my own life. And 'The desert song', esp "All of my life, in every season..." I've played a zillion times over, so moved every-time.
Thank you for sharing your life and heart, it has spoken so much to me.
"That from the heart touches the heart"
All the best Love Rebecca

whats so gripping about that whole thing is the part about
"masses yearning to breathe free"
the heart of so many broken spirits not just in the us but every where...their hearts are just yearning to breathe freedom.

thanks for this.

Hi Jill,

I just wanted to say how glad I am to have found your blog. Echoing Rebecca's comment earlier, I saw your testimony on the 'This Is Our God' album and your words really touched me. Thank you for sharing, and for your beautiful voice. Without knowing, you helped a girl who's feeling very lost, recognise that her God is still there, even in the darkest hours.

Thank you, Jill.
